New Orleans, Gulf Coast Braces for Gustav

  • Hurricanes Explained: How 2005 Was the Perfect Storm
  • Predicting Atlantic Hurricanes

Gustav roared into the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico as a ferocious Category 4 hurricane Sunday after destroying homes and roads in Cuba. The mayor of New Orleans ordered residents to flee the "storm of the century" by morning.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Gustav weakened slightly over Cuba but was expected to regain strength as it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and toward the U.S. Coast, possibly becoming a top-scale Category 5 hurricane on Sunday.

Forecasters said Gustav was just short of Category 5 strength when it made landfall Saturday on mainland Cuba near the community of Los Palacios in Pinar del Rio — a region that produces much of the tobacco used to make the nation's famed cigars.

The eye of the storm was about 375 miles southeast of the Mississippi River and moving northwest at about 16 mph at 7 a.m. Miami time, the National Hurricane Center said. "Gustav is forecast to remain a major hurricane until landfall," the center said.

A Hurricane warning has been issued for the area between Cameron, Louisiana and the Alabama-Florida border. A Tropical Storm Warning is in place from east of the Alabama-Florida border to the Ochlockonee River and from West of Cameron, Louisiana, to just east of High Island, Texas.

Rainfall of 6 to 12 inches is forecast over areas of Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Arkansas, with up to 20 inches possible in some areas through Wednesday morning.

For New Orleans, Gustav Reminds Some of Katrina

  • Hurricanes Explained: How 2005 Was the Perfect Storm
  • Predicting Atlantic Hurricanes

Three years ago today, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf of Mexico, leveling cities and causing billions of dollars in damage. In fact, New Orleans has yet to fully recover from the catastrophe.

Tropical storm Gustav now spins off the west coast of Jamaica and is poised to gain strength in the coming days to reach hurricane strength. NOAA predicts, using a three-day forecast track, that the storm is headed straight for New Orleans and the surrounding areas in Louisiana and Mississippi. (Track the storm)

Forecasters say that Gustav will reach hurricane strength when it passes Cuba sometime early on Sunday morning. The difficult thing to predict is how the storm will behave once it reaches the warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. However likely or not, a similar storm with a similar track in 2005 began in the same manner.

Forecasters cautioned that the path of Gustav — like that of most hurricanes — remained uncertain.

"It is simply impossible to determine exactly where and when Gustav will make final landfall," said Richard Knabb of the hurricane center. "The chances of hurricane-force winds within the next five days are essentially the same at each individual location from the Florida Panhandle coast westward through the entire coastline of Louisiana."

Video: Gustav Set to Batter Cuba, Enter Gulf of Mexico

Fears the Gustav could hurt Gulf oil production sent oil prices spiking above $120 a barrel this week before they settled at $115.59 on Thursday. But they were creeping up again on Friday, jumping past $116 a barrel.

The Gulf has 4,000 oil rigs and half of America's refining capacity. Hundreds of offshore workers have already been pulled out and analysts said the storm could send U.S. gas prices back over $4 a gallon.

IE8 Brings New Ways to Hide Surfing Habits From Big Brother (or Others)

Microsoft has releasd Internet Explorer 8.0. Now existing in beta mode, IE 8.0 features several new enhancements that the company claims to make the user experience much more enjoyable while keeping private information safe. The newest version of this Web browser, according to the company's Web site, boast six features that make this product unique and better than other browsers, like Mozilla's Firefox or Opera. Features include search suggestions, Web slices, a SmartScreen filter, compatibility veiw, InPrivate browsing and accelerators.

All of the bells and whistles have unique reasons for existing but there's one area that will likely be the biggest winner (or loser) for Microsoft. The introduction of InPrivate functions are likely to take the pubic by storm and have competitors scrambling to release something similar. Not to mention one other detail: there are a lot of marketing folks who depend on certain elements that the new browser blocks.

InPrivate consists of two different things and actually does its job very well. The first, InPrivate Browsing, removes the trace of specific site-related activity by blocking a user's browsing history, temporary Internet files, form data, cookies, and usernames and passwords. Yes, that right, IE8 helps keep your information from being retained by the browser, leaving no evidence of your browsing or search history. Dare I say "porn mode" is now available in IE 8? (OK, it's out there so let's move on.)

The second, InPrivate Blocking, is aimed at giving users the control over what information is shared with third parties, things like images, ads and anyalytics. Access to this information allows third parties to profile a user's behavior across multiple sites and watch for patterns. Additionaly, Microsoft offers the following disclaimer:

Because InPrivate Blocking is designed to watch for and block only third-party content that appears with a high frequency across sites you visit, no content is blocked until such levels are detected, nor is any such content blocked which is served directly by the site you are visiting.

So, depending on your activity and the sites visited over a certain period of time, it could be a while before some of this information is blocked. All of this is highly customizable as long as you know where to look.

Internet Explorer 8 will be the second big upgrade from Microsoft since the Mozilla's Firefox started to break into the browser's dominance. Still, by some measures and calculations, IE remains dominant and has the most users online. Most online surfers prefer IE while about 20 percent choose Firefox. Opera and Apple's Safari comprises less than 10 percent of the market. Regardless, the influence of Firefox can be seen in some elements of IE 8.0 and Microsoft has answered the public's call.

Have a go and compare this new version to Firefox. You can download the newest IE8 beta release at www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/ .

Obama Likes Biden but Public Reaction Could Sound Alarm

Initial public reaction to Biden's selection appears rather unenthusiastic, according to national surveys, news outlets and various political blogs. Although Flingjore's World believed Senator Obama hedged toward chosing Senator Clinton as a running mate, it's now confirmed that the two rivals could not bridge the great divide on policy. Digging deeper into the numbers suggest the party is uniting around its likely nominee, but not completely.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Barack Obama attracting 46 percent of the vote while John McCain earns 42 percent. On the day that Barack Obama announced Joe Biden as his running mate, 39 percent of voters said he made the right choice. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 25 percent disagreed and another 35 percent are not sure.

The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update finds a precise tie between John McCain and Barack Obama, with 45 percent of nationwide registered voters currently supporting each candidate for president. The two have been closely matched in Gallup Poll Daily tracking for the last 11 days, with neither candidate enjoying a statistically significant lead (though Obama has typically held a slim advantage).

A New York Times/CBS News poll, which was taken before Obama selected Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware as his running mate, also suggests that Clinton’s 1,640 pledged delegates are evenly split over whom they plan to vote for on the floor of the convention during the roll call vote on Wednesday evening. Forty-two percent of Mrs. Clinton’s pledged delegates surveyed say they would vote for her. But 43 percent say they would vote for Mr. Obama while another 15 percent have not decided what they will do when Mrs. Clinton’s name is put into nomination.

To make the process more fun, try out the CQPolitics scenario builder.

The Democrats now face an uphill battle trying to bridge a gap within their ranks. In response, the McCain campaign released another ad that underscores the pother among some Clinton supporters today at the start of the Democratic convention.

The new McCain spot features a former supporter of Sen. Clinton who has jumped from the cause of the Democrats to back the likely Republican candidate, Sen. McCain. Debra Bartoshevich, the subject of the above ad, will be speaking at a presser later this afternoon from Denver.

McCain Camp Leaks VP Pick Announcement

Republican strategists are creating some buzz this week with leaks about a potential announcement of Sen. John McCain's running mate on August 29, one day after the wrap-up of the Democratic National Convention. The strategy calls for McCain to name his choice early on Friday morning in an effort to diminish Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama's post-convention bounce.

The news was first reported by Politico, quoting unnamed Republican sources, in a post on the Web site on Monday. "Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) plans to celebrate his 72nd birthday on Aug. 29 by naming his running mate at a huge rally in the battleground state of Ohio." The report could not be independently verified on McCain's official campaign Web site.

Meanhwile, on the Democratic ticket, speculation about Obama's running mate continues to make rounds across the Internet. The list of potential running mates, according to the Associated Press, is widely believed to be down to four names: Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Many news outlets, citing unnamed Democrats, continue to believe that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is a longshot pick. Given the sudden embrace of Clinton by Obama can only lead others to assume the senator from New York is very much a part of the conversation.

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll of convention delegates found that 28 percent preferred Mrs. Clinton for vice president.

Still, the move to attract Clinton supporters remains a puzzle. More analysis and educated guessing can be found in Friday's post: Democrats Align to Hint at a Obama-Clinton Ticket in November

Rugby Olympic Gold Remains Elusive for U.S., World

Rugby union football was last held at the Olympics in 1924 and the U.S. won the gold medal with a 17-3 victory over France before a crowd of 30,000. Introduced by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, rugby was on the Olympic program at Paris in 1900, at London in 1908, Antwerp in 1920, and Paris again in 1924. Rugby union was cancelled as an Olympic event in 1928, and the United States remain Olympic champions.

Today, the sport of rugby is recognized by the International Olympic Committee but is not included on the official Olympic program. The International Rugby Board, or IRB, is the governing body of the sport and is spearheading an effort to make Rugby Sevens an Olympic sport in 2016. The IRB hopes to convince IOC members of the merits of seven-a-side rugby as a global game with a unique ethos and a passionate following.

    Video: Rugby Is Reaching Out

Sevens is the fastest growing form of Rugby that features seven players on each team with two seven-minute periods per match. (Rugby union features 15 players per side with two 40-minute periods.) The fast-paced, high-scoring nature of this type of rugby often features the quickest and fittest players in the world. In 2008, 32 national teams took part in the IRB Sevens World Series, an annual tournament that is played in eight different countries to sell-out crowds with a global TV reach of 500 million viewers.

The decision to eliminate baseball and softball from the next round of Olympics allowed IOC members to vote on the inclusion of two new sports in 2012. Five sports — roller sports, squash, golf, karate and rugby sevens — had been studied by the Olympic Commission as part of its two-year analysis. In 2005, IOC members selected karate and squash as the two sports which could potentially be chosen to join the Olympics for London 2012. Rugby was a close third in voting but did not gain enough votes to make official consideration. At the conclusion of voting, neither squash nor karate obtained a two-thirds majority and were not included as new sports for 2012.

The IOC is asking the general public across the world for feedback about its plans for the future of the Olympic Games and has created a specific website, the Virtual Olympic Congress, to record detailed feedback through December 31, 2008. Interested parties can respond to the IOC’s Virtual Olympic Congress at http://www.2009congress.olympic.org/.

The International Rugby Board, or IRB, is a member of the International Sports Federations, an organization that must ensure that each sports' statutes, practice and activities conform with the Olympic Charter. In order to be recognized, these organizations must apply the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code and conduct effective out-of-competition tests in accordance with the established rules.

The IRB's arguments as to why Rugby should be in the Olympic Games are as follows:

    • Rugby reinforces the ideals of Olympism, thanks to Rugby’s long-standing ethos of fair play and friendship
    • Rugby Sevens would reach a new and young audience, including Rugby’s 3 million players in 116 countries and the tens of millions of fans worldwide
    • Rugby Sevens does not need a purpose built stadium and would fill the Olympic Stadium in the first week of competition, adding an additional vibrant and youthful tone for the Games
    • Rugby Sevens would extend the number of potential medal-winning nations in what would be a true world championship. Countries that could aspire to Olympic success in Rugby include Fiji, Samoa, Argentina, South Africa, Kenya and New Zealand.
    • Rugby would increase funds to grow the Olympic Movement, by attracting new commercial partners and spectators. At the same time Rugby would enjoy increased funding and access to facilities from National Olympic Committees as an Olympic sport.

The IOC will vote on which sports to include in the Olympic Games in Copenhagen, Denmark in October 2009. For more information about the inclusion of Rugby Sevens in the next Olympics, visit the official site of the IRB.

Democrats Align to Hint at Obama-Clinton Ticket in November

Updating Analysis: Two Democrats Still Required (June 4, 2008)

Barack Obama's secret face-to-face meeting with Hillary Clinton in early June was a cloak-and-dagger spy hunt that produced nothing but denials. Since then, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president has kept to his promise to not "speak" about a potential running mate. As we all know, publishing on the Internet stops just short of a statement.

Obama's initial attempt to quash any early speculation was reported on Flingjore's World two months ago. "The next time you hear from me about the vice presidential selection process will be when I have selected a vice president," Obama told reporters aboard his campaign plane last June. "If you hear second-hand accounts, rumors, gossip about the selection process, you can take it from me that it is wrong, because we're not going to be talking about it in the press."

Recently, Senator Obama has offered supporters the chance to be "the first to know" his choice for vice-presidential running mate by subscribing to an e-mail service. Maybe, now, we can almost confirm an Obama-Clinton ticket, a fact that has caused much speculation for some time.

In a statement from the Obama and Clinton Press Offices on August 14, the two camps confirmed a commitment to winning back the White House by placing both names in nomination "as a show of unity and in recognition." Furthermore, the following passage from that statement alludes to more:

"Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are looking forward to a convention unified behind Barack Obama as the Party's nominee and to victory this fall for America."

Moving ahead is the presence of a new button that appears in the sidebar of www.barackobama.com that reads "Welcome Hillary Supporters" and invites visitors to "Get Involved."

    Welcome Hillary Supporters from barackobama.com
Clicking on the button takes the reader to the "Join Our Movement" page of the Obama campaign Web site and showcases the following video:

In covering politics, making an incorrect but educated guess can be suicide. Given the facts of the matter, the sudden embrace of Clinton by Obama (despite their differences) can only lead one to assume that the mystery running mate will be the senator from New York.

If this isn't the case, then why wait until the middle of August to promote the "National Movement for Change?" Again, just follow the bouncing ball, learn the words and sing along: "Obama is made of rubber and McCain is made of glue".

Well, the answer will soon be disclosed via text/e-mail message and then counted as fact. Until then, feel free to sign up on the Mobile Obama WAP site to get the scoop, firsthand.

Fire Eagle Eyes Are Watching You

Fire Eagle, a new location platform launched on August 12 by Yahoo! developers, is a creepy tool that could transform every site on the Web. In general, Fire Eagle is a place that Geolocation data goes and was developed as a way to make Web sites more geographically aware and personalized. That means the service can track your location, based on your preferences for sharing information, and then allow for communications between other Web services. Fire Eagle employs a set of APIs that social networks use to share data.

"Our job is to make it possible for any service online to respond to your location — we're here to play with other social networks to help you make the best use of your location information," the developers say in their blog. Since the beta phases begain last March, a number of high-profile services, including Dopplr, Brightkite, Movable Type, and Pownce have implemented Fire Eagle through the numerous APIs Yahoo provides.

For most users, the question remains simple: do I really want others to know where I am at any given moment? Sure, sharing your exact location may work for friends, family and, especially, in emergency situations. The question may then turn to "what do you have to hide?" In other words, once your data is published on the Internet, it's really hard to get it back.

The problem is that privacy policies across the Web are all very different and using a service through a third party could raise some real issues. Some blogs note, however, that while users can purge information from Fire Eagle, this will not delete location data collected over time. This means that users will have to actually learn how Fire Eagle works and what to turn off and what to turn on.

Fire Eagle's code of conduct for developers stipulates that they must be up-front and transparent when they explain to users how they will use the information, including what ad networks they might share it with.

There are many added benefits and opportunities for advertisers that location information offers. Fire Eagle makes it easier to connect the online and offline consumers and target their preferences. For instance, a search engine could do a more precise job of retrieving locally relevant results for gas, food and lodging. This concept is great if someone is traveling but developers must stick to the code of conduct and not bombard users with spam.

A real benefit also exists in providing more relevant local news and information. Fire Eagle extends to mobile Web sites and could provide users with great information about a certain geographical area, including real estate, school and crime data. With this, however, users come a step closer to the geo-targeted ad. Honestly, when you need information in a hurry, do you need to be pinged with a coupon?

As for the social networks, having the ability to know where people are physically could be especially useful for planning social events. Still, Yahoo! will be haunting by the notion of becoming "Big Brother" on the Web, which is an obvious connotation that stems from any type of geotracking technology.

Before signing up, read carefully the Yahoo! privacy policy. For more information, visit http://fireeagle.yahoo.net/ or just feel the buzz of the blogosphere.

NOVA Takes Third at Nationals, Aspen Wins USA Rugby 7s Crown

NOVA ended the 2008 summer season with a third-place finish at the 2008 National Club 7s Championships. The two-day event showcased the top 16 teams in the nation and featured excellent rugby throughout. NOVA came up short on Sunday with a loss to Aspen in the semifinals but managed to rally against Denver in for an overtime win. Aspen, NOVA, Denver and the Belmont Tigers emerged as pool winners in the National Club 7s Championships Saturday.

    NOVA 2008 National 7s Team

The battle for third place brought a nail-biting conclusion, as the Denver Barbarians bounced back from a 12-5 halftime deficit to lead Northern Virginia until late in the game, when NOVA’s P.J. Komongnan went the distance for a try and the successful conversion put the score at 19-19. Despite Denver's best efforts, NOVA rolled on to win, 24-19, after a try by Ed Stockunas only two minutes into sudden death.

On Saturday, NOVA dominated pool competition and finished with a plus-87-point scoring differential, the highest at the tournament. Wary of a second-day letdown, NOVA faced rivals Maryland in the first match of the day and managed a 12-7 win. Blessed with plenty of team speed and 7s smarts, Aspen blanked NOVA in the semi-final match 33-0, handing the team their only loss of the season.

Aspen's Mike Palefau made an early statement by intercepting a pass inside his own 22 and rumbled for a 90-meter try. Aspen then made a further statement by hauling in P.J. Komongnan from behind to prevent a try later in the match. "PJ never gets caught from behind," said NOVA manager Bill Gardner. "That was a surprise."

The Gentlemen of Aspen defeated the Belmont Tigers, 26-24, to win the 2008 National Club 7s Championships. The teams traded scores throughout the game, but it was Belmont who led most of the game. The Tigers held a 24-19 lead going into the final couple of minutes and attacked off a lineout near their own 22. Belmont spun the ball to midfield but Aspen then stole the ball at the breakdown and countered, eventually sending Jesse Pekkala in under the posts to tie the game. Kenyan international Teddy Omondi calmly slotted the conversion for the win.

NOVA on Sunday was playing without Seta Tuilevuka, who suffered a high ankle sprain against Boston on Saturday. "As much as we don't want to make excuses about one player, he's an important guy for us and it hurt," Bill Gardner said in an article on Erugby.com. Regardless, Tuilevuka was an essential player and team leader throughout the summer. Overall, across the board, every player and coach involved with the summer program feels a huge amount of accomplishment and reward for the team's success. Winning at the national level requires committment from all levels of the club and NOVA really showed thier talent in 2008 by finishing with a 29-1 record.

Hurricanes Explained: How the 2005 Season Was the Perfect Storm

Tropical Storm Edouard's passage did little to disrupt Texas refineries, but provided the region's plant operators with what could be considered a fully interactive rehearsal for future storms that could be more severe. Edouard prompted the evacuation of 154 manned production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, about one-fifth of the 717 operating there.

The formation of powerful storms in the Gulf of Mexico brings back memories of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Many records were broken in 2005, including the most hurricanes ever, the most category 5 hurricanes and the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic as measured by atmospheric pressure.

Scientists rely on information gathered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Air Force Reserve personnel who fly directly into storms in hurricane hunter aircraft. Hurricane hunters drop sensors into hurricanes that measure winds, temperature, and air pressure. In addition to satellites from NOAA, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Defense, scientists use data from NOAA data buoys and weather radars. All that data goes into NOAA’s computer forecast models to arrive at hurricane forecasts.

NOAA has since launched in 2007 an experimental Atlantic Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook model. While this is only intended to be a visual companion product to the text alerts, it provides a good look of the current trends.

Atlantic Hurricanes: How Scientists Observe and Predict the Season

Warm sea surface temperatures and low sea level pressures observed over the tropical Atlantic in June and July, combined with an active early season in the deep tropics, have prompted experts to raise the possibility of more hurricanes in 2008 than previously predicted.

NASA scientists have recently made discoveries about the behavior and nature of these gigantic storms, but hurricanes are really just manifestations of natural processes interacting. Observations from space have enabled NASA and other research institutions to develop sophisticated computer models, too.

These models allow scientists to simulate and test hypothesizes about hurricanes, which in turn facilitate development of new, more accurate predictive tools. The Colorado State University hurricane team is calling for a total of 17 named storms with five becoming intense hurricanes of category three or greater.

Five named storms have been observed so far this season including Hurricane Bertha, which was the longest-lived tropical cyclone that has ever formed during July, and Hurricane Dolly, which made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane in south Texas on July 23.

In 2004 and 2005, 13 major hurricanes formed in the Atlantic basin — seven of them striking the U.S. coast. In 2004, Hurricanes Charley, Ivan and Jeanne made landfall followed in 2005 by Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma.

"Those years were anomalies," Dr. William Gray said. "We are in an active cycle in the Atlantic basin that is expected to last another 15 to 20 years. We believe this is part of a natural ocean cycle and is not the result of human-induced increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide."

Hurricanes are the most powerful accumulations of energy on Earth. Nothing else even comes close. They are fearsome tropical storms that spring to life roughly the same time every year, churning up oceans and shredding the nerves of residents who live along coastal zones.

Video: THEMIS Animations Explain Northern Lights Phenomenon

    Update to http://www.flingjore.com/2008/07/nasa-explains-dancing-northern-lights.html :

Scientists have discovered a secret to the Northern Lights, one that exposes some of the mystery behind the aurora borealis for the first time. Using a fleet of satellites, NASA researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Center observed explosions of magnetic energy that cause sudden brightenings and rapid movements that appear as a green-colored hue.

    Video: Large Auroral Substorm

As a follow-up to an earlier post, NASA Explains Dancing Northern Lights, it's important to understand how space weather impacts the Earth. This video from the NASA — Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visulation Studio shows THEMIS satellite in orbit with visual lines that project the magnetic field.

This video animation shows a magnetospheric substorm, during which the reconnection causes energy to be rapidly released along the field lines causing the auroras to brighten.

Website Prototyping Tool Offers Online Collaboration on Clickable Wireframes

The launch of ProtoShare may possibly be the next great thing for Web junkies across the nation.

Site9, a Portland-based devoloper of collaborative software, launched the SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) tool that enables Web developers to build dynamic and navigable website prototypes that team members can then review and comment on in real-time. The application is Web-based and is available from any Internet connection.

Previously, developers who prototyped websites had to resort to paper-based tools or non-purposed software programs that offered no fluid method for sharing among colleagues and clients. The interactivity of ProtoShare helps to create a true website experience that is dynamic and navigable.

The tool helps team members to collaborate on a site's evolution by simultaneously and immediately sharing comments and ideas. Once the process of prototyping and collaboration is finished, the website development team has a clear and concise roadmap to follow, thereby reducing communication mishaps, the need for many go-backs and possibly helping to avoid missed deadlines.

The software boasts realistic website prototyping aimed at better user experience. Often times, project managers are mired in the weeds over a clunky collaborative process. Success is generally measured by a higher team satisfaction realistic expectations. And, businesses seek a better return on investment stemming from an efficient process. The end result in such a scenario is producing a better Website in less time.

"ProtoShare revolutionizes the way the industry will prototype and develop websites," said Andrew Mottaz, co-founder and CEO. "Our goal is to bring true collaboration to this critical stage of website development. When you get the beginning right, the rest flows faster and with realistic expectation."

ProtoShare does come at a price. Basic plans, which come with a 30-day trial, will run a single developer about $25 per month or up to $100 per month for a team of three. More information and details are available at www.protoshare.com, including a video tour.
